MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers scored five points early to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-2, on Friday night at Miller Park and impose a seventh game in the National League championship series.
Dodgers rookie Walker Buehler and right-winger Brewers Jhoulys Chacín are expected to start Saturday night, but that could change in the 20 hours before the first pitch.
The Dodgers were the last to play in a seventh game, almost a year ago. They lost the last game of the world series against the Houston Astros at Dodger Stadium. The last time the Brewers played in Game 7, 36 years ago. That too was part of the world series, the only one in which they appeared. They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis on October 20, 1982.
The NLCS will have started the day before the ALCS and will end two days after the Boston Red Sox completed the Astros. The first World Series game is scheduled for Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
In the first of what would be two playoff games for the Brewers, Wade Miley started again. He also started the fifth match, a trick, turned out. After five shots, he was replaced by right-hander Brandon Woodruff. On Friday night, Miley became the first pitcher to start consecutive games in a playoff series in nearly 90 years.
In the night battle half an inch ahead, the Dodgers beat David Freese. Freese has started three regular season games (more than 1,100) as the hitter of his career and has never led a home run match. And so on the fifth step of Miley, who announced his departure two days earlier, Freese changed course over the fence in the center right field. His hometown circuit was the first for the Dodgers since the second game. They led the LN in the circuits in the regular season.
The Brewers responded by four points late in the first run when left-handed Hyun-jin Ryu allowed five hits, including four consecutively from a total of seven shots. Ryu had been the best pitcher of the Dodgers in the second half of the season and had a good start in the Division series. The Brewers proved more troublesome for him, as Ryu lasted 4 1/3 innings in the second game. Entering the sixth match with a chance to finish the series, Ryu cleared scoring hits for Jesús Aguilar, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz on the off-speed courts. It became obvious that if Ryu was looking for quick results with his curved ball, the Brewers would be caught.
The Brewers led after the first run, 4-1. Ryu faced nine batters and throwing 31 shots. They scored again in the second run. Christian Yelich, averaging .143 in the series, doubled on a change and Ryan Braun doubled on a curve. The Brewers led, 5-1. Ryu lasted three innings and the Dodgers were in their compound with mixed hopes of returning to the match without hurting their pitcher if Match 7 became necessary.
An enthusiastic crowd cheered on Manny Machado, a Dodgers striker, who deliberately kicked Aguilar in Game 4. He struck in his first game, jumped on goal in his second goal, and on his third goal, while the potential tie was again drawn. The Dodgers had scored earlier in the inning when Brian Dozier, the striker, walked and Freese doubled in the middle of the field. As the crowd stood and hoisted one last time, Machado stood at the stop for the second run of the eighth inning.
Chacín, the happy right-hander who started and won the third game of the NLCS, is scheduled to start Saturday night for the Brewers. The prospect of a seventh game for Chacín, at age 30 in his first playoff match, as well as for an organization that has already competed in the World Series before and never won one, seemed to delight him.
"I think it's more than I'm dreaming of," he said Friday afternoon. "And just to think about it, just make me forget."
That said, the brewers who throw – who starts, who else spear and when – have been a fluid exercise.
The Dodgers are expected to start with Buehler, 24, 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in the playoffs. He allowed four points in seven innings in the NLCS, against Chacín in the third match.
