Brie Larson reveals new details about Captain Marvel's personal struggle

Marvel Studios released its first big promotional boost for Captain Marvel, by launching a new photo gallery of the film, as well as new details about the characters, as well as insights into how the film will fit in Marvel's wide range of film universe.

Well the revelations continue to unfold, as Captain Marvel star Brie Larson sits with EW to give detailed explanations of her portrayal of Carol Danvers and why Carol Marvel's role as captain creates a serious internal conflict for the character. As Larson explains:

"You have this part of Kree that is emotionless, he's an amazing and competitive fighter" Larson says. "Then there is this human part which is imperfect, but it is also the thing by which it ends up leading. It's the thing that's causing her problems, but it's also what makes her great. And it is his two sides who are fighting each other.

This rich foundation for the character is a big part of what drew Larson into the role, giving the Oscar-winning actress a dramatic depth that she could use to propel her through the most fantastic parts ( or completely stupid) of making a Marvel Studios movie:

"I'm very passionate about this film because we did not reduce the time. It's funny, when it's funny, but also when there are deep emotions, it's real. So I was able to incorporate some of these things that I brought to these dramatic roles, which I'm really proud of because I think it's really going to put this film apart.

After these new revelations about Captain Marvel, It's easy to see immediate parallels between Carol Danvers of Brie Larson and Peter Quill of Chris Pratt of Guardians of the Galaxy. Specifically, it is the description of Danvers as being that sometimes stupid, impetuous, sometimes comic cosmic warrior who has left unresolved major problems on Earth; however, where guardians was much more reserved and understated about the emotional turning point of Peter Quill, Captain Marvel will support more heavily in his dramatic sub-plot.

This can be very appropriate, given the other details we know about history. We know Carol will start as a member of the Kree Empire Starforce team, who will be fighting alongside a younger version of guardians the bad guys Ronan (Lee Pace) and Korath (Djimon Honsou). This detail suggests that Carol could become seriously disillusioned by her role in the Kree Empire and her teammates; this disillusionment could leave her in an extremely vulnerable place.
