British Airways confirmed a data breach.

The London-based airline, the largest in the UK, did not reveal much about this violation, but only hackers stole customer data from its ba.com website.

In a statement, BA stated that the "personal and financial details" of customers who made bookings on the BA site or application between August 21 and August 5 were compromised, but that travel or passport information had not been taken.

A spokesman told TechCrunch that "about 380,000 card payments" had been compromised. BA had more than 45 million passengers last year.

"The violation has been resolved and our website is functioning normally," the company said in a statement.

"British Airways communicates with the customers concerned and we advise all customers who think they have been affected by this incident to contact their banks or their credit card suppliers and follow the recommended advice," the statement said.

Under the new European GDPR data protection laws, the airline can incur fines of up to 4% of its overall annual turnover.
