DAVIE, Fla. – Despite a frustrating year, DeVante Parker is expected to stay with the Miami Dolphins for the remainder of the 2018 season.
Parker, a talented but often injured Miami 2015 first-round pick, has been the subject of commercial discussions dating back to the training camp. But Dolphins coach Adam Gase did not hesitate to answer the question of whether he was confident Parker would stay in Miami after the trade deadline: "Yeah, I do it."
Parker missed five of the first seven games of the season for various reasons, including a broken major, a bad quad and the decision of a coach. On October 21, Parker's agent, Jimmy Gould, aggravated an already delicate situation by calling Gase "incompetent" in a statement to ESPN that cast doubt on the coach's honesty in the way he had treated his client.
Parker was adamant that Gould did not speak for him and that it was "his own opinion". The following Thursday night, he had six catches for a career-high 134 yards in a loss to the Texans.
The Dolphins need Parker's contribution now that Albert Wilson has been placed on the injured reserve due to hip injury and that Kenny Stills continues to fight a groin injury that causes him to 39, prevented from playing Thursday.
Gase had not anticipated the sale of the Dolphins to the trading deadline, expressing his confidence that his team could still make a push in the playoffs after a 4-4 start.
"I love where we are right now, I love this group," Gase said. "I would like to stay healthy from now on.I do not think we have more room to lose guys for the year.I think we have reached the maximum of our abilities."
The deadline for NFL trade is Tuesday at 16 hours. AND.
Gase also said that quarterback Ryan Tannehill "was progressing slowly" as a result of an injury to the right shoulder that had prevented him from playing during the last three games. Tannehill started throwing light throws, said Gase, but he's not ready to pitch at the level that he needs to play.
"He can throw a football, that's pretty much all the power he can put behind," Gase said.
Indications are that Brock Osweiler is online to make his fourth start of the season Sunday against the New York Jets.
Gase said Tannehill threw tennis balls last week and made some light shots with a football. Dolphins coaches will be following Tannehill closely this week.
Gase said he would ideally like to identify the starting quarter of this week by Wednesday.
"He's in a position where he can throw a football, and we're gaining strength in this area," said Gase of Tannehill. "We will see more in the coming days how he feels the next day after having had the opportunity to pitch – how painful he is the next day or how much energy he has."
Gase has repeatedly referred to Tannehill's injury as "unusual", claiming that there was "a lot of gray" in the way coaches evaluate his recovery. We fear a "huge setback" if they push it too fast.
Osweiler has received positive reviews from coaches Gase and Dolphins to replace Tannehill. Yet, Gase repeatedly reiterated that Tannehill would be the starter as soon as he would be ready.
