ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Denver Broncos tight end, Jake Butt, tore his left ACL in the team's run on Thursday and will miss the rest of the season
This is the third time that ACL Butt has suffered over the past four years, but the first time at his left knee. He tore his right ACL during conditioning exercises in Michigan in spring 2014, then tore his right ACL again in his last Michigan match at the 2016 Orange Bowl.
"Jake has been working hard to recover from his previous injuries and we feel very bad for him," said Broncos coach Vance Joseph, as the team confirmed his last setback. "This is a great kid who has become a very good football player. We have no doubt that Jake will come back stronger than ever."
Joseph said after Thursday's practice that Butt was sent for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam after suffering a left knee injury in practice – "he is assessed for a knee, left knee, "
Butt suffered the injury in what is still a part of the contactless practice.
Butt was initially examined by the team's medical staff at the Broncos complex and, at that time, there was concern that Butt had torn his ACL. Butt was later taken for an MRI, which confirmed the initial review.
The Broncos had hoped the second-year draw could become an impact player in their passing game. In three games, he has received eight receptions for 85 yards. Butt played 36 games in the first game of the season against Seattle, 26 wins in the second week against Oakland and 35 games last Sunday against Baltimore.
Butt was a fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft by the Broncos. He spent his rookie season on an injured reserve as he recovered from his injury at the Orange Bowl.
At the start of training camp this summer, Butt said, "It's probably the best I've had in my career with a full year with professional strength coaches."
"When you've left football like I've done a few times, you know you can not take chances to play," he added.
The Broncos have two other tight ends on their list – Jeff Heuerman and Matt LaCosse – to accompany Brian Parker in the training team. Parker would be the quickest shot the team could make as he was with the Broncos throughout the off-season program and training camp.
