Browns to interview Gregg Williams for head coaching job

Cleveland general manager John Dorsey is impressed with interim coach Gregg Williams just two games into his role as the Browns’ head coach.

So much so, in fact, that as he plans to give Dorsey an opportunity to interview for the full-time job.

“I think he deserves that,” Dorsey said on Wednesday, via Cleveland.com.

Williams took over for Hue Jackson, who was fired last month just one day after the Browns fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley was also fired that same day, and replaced by running back coach/associate head coach Freddie Kitchens.

Williams — who became the Browns’ defensive coordinator before the 2017 season — and Kitchens have led the team to a 1-1 record since their promotions, too. They even pulled off a 28-16 win against the Atlanta Falcons last week behind a big day from rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield, who went 17-of-20 through the air for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

While Williams will get his chance to interview for the job, Dorsey said he is open to anything while conducting his search. He isn’t in a rush, either.

And though he said “man” repeatedly while describing his ideal candidate on Wednesday, Dorsey isn’t strictly looking for a man to fill that job.

“I just want the best possible head coach to move this thing forward regardless of age,” Dorsey said, via Cleveland.com. “It could be a woman. I’m serious. We’re going to look at everything.”
