Browns to name Baker Mayfield early QB Monday after talking with Tyrod Taylor

The Cleveland Browns have an easy decision to make in the quarterback decision, following Baker Mayfield lighting the Jets and leading the Browns on a great comeback in Thursday's game for their first victory in 635 days.

And they'll do what you expect: Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that Mayfield will coach Coach Hue Jackson for Week 4.

After Mayfield's thrilling second half, an effort that overcame a 14-0 deficit, Jackson refused to say who would be his starter in Week 4, saying that he had to "watch the tape" first.

Nobody believed it, but it was a good way to handle the situation with Tyrod Taylor – Naming Mayfield the starter after the victory with Taylor in the concussion protocol would have been disrespectful to the veteran. Mayfield only came because Taylor was excluded in the second quarter, although fans were already singing his name with the Browns lagging behind.

"The most important thing is to see where it is, physically, foremost," Jackson said about Taylor on Friday. "There have been other concussions, we will see first and foremost what is best for him and then everything will be fine as we move forward."

Jackson more or less indicated during a conference call with reporters this week that Mayfield was going to be the guy who was asked who would be his starter.

"I think you all feel good about where the situation is going, so let's wait and see and go from there," said Jackson.

In the end, Jackson and the Browns have no choice: they must advance Mayfield. Cleveland is now 1-1-1 and could easily be 3-0 considering how the team played. Jackson's mistakes and Taylor's questionable play in the first two games led to a tie at home against the Steelers, a defeat on the Saints' Road and almost another defeat against the Jets on Thursday night.

New York was in full control until Mayfield intervened and took over. The attack had a new life and the stadium went crazy as Mayfield made a big shot after a big shot. We could feel what was happening: the Browns won this game once Mayfield was in the middle. Return to Taylor after this performance would require a 24/7 security detail for Hue.

It's also an easier time to make a change of QB, as the Browns are holding a 10 day window between Thursday's game and their Week 4 trip to Oakland to play the Raiders. Internally, there is no doubt that Week 4 will begin.

Now all we have to do is wait for the time it takes for Jackson to think about the situation.
