BUFFALO, NY (AP) – Jaroslav Halak blocked 32 shots and the Boston Bruins rebounded after a shutout in the season with a 4-0 win over the Buffalo Sabers on Thursday night.
Brad Marchand scored four goals scored by captain Zdeno Chara, rookie Ryan Donato, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron on a black lead. One night after an embarrassing 7-0 loss to the NHL's elite Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals, the Bruins had an easier season against the league's worst team last year.
The new look of the Sabers, consisting of rookie choice No. 1 Rasmus Dahlin and Jack Eichel as captain, is more like the team that finished last in the standings for the third time in five years. After receiving some enthusiastic encouragement during their presentation before the preliminary faceoff of their first game of the season, the Sabers were booed out of the ice after the first and second periods.
Since last season, Buffalo has lost five straight times and six straight home wins, three of which are laundered. The Sabers have also dropped to 0-5-1 in the last six openings.
Buffalo was unable to score despite the fact that he had spent a good chunk of the last five minutes while the goalkeeper was looking for an additional striker.
Halak started one night after allowing two goals on 18 shots to replace Tuukka Rask, who was stopped in the middle of the second period. The shutout was the 43rd anniversary of Halak's career, and the first since his signing with the Bruins in July.
Chara opened the scoring at 6:33, when he was allowed to skate alone on the left side and beat the addition of the off – season independent agent, Carter Hutton, on the short side.
Hutton made 22 saves and had no chance to score on Donato's power play goal nine minutes later. Donato was the only one to drive to the right post, where he redirected Marchand's pass up.
The 18-year-old Dahlin had an inconsistent evening and sometimes seemed reluctant to be paired with several defensive partners. He was on the ice for the Bruins' third goal, allowing David Krejci to pass through the crease and then directly between his legs. The pass allowed Pastrnak to score alone while he was left alone at the left post with 3:44 left in the second period.
NOTES: Boston has improved to 5-2 in games after starting the season with a defeat in play. … The Sabers have only 10 players in the lineup who participated in Buffalo's first season, and only six on the first day of 2016-17. … At 18 years and 175 days, Rookie Dahlin's No. 1 pick is the second youngest player to open a season in Buffalo, behind the only choice at 1987, Pierre Turgeon (18, 41) ). … Bruins RW Chris Wagner, who played 1:10 against Washington, was scratched and replaced in training by LW Anders Bjork.
