While Bryan Cranston hasn’t read the script for the Breaking Bad movie, he would be happy to return if asked. Recently, fans of AMC’s landmark dramatic series were caught by surprise when it was reported creator Vince Gilligan is developing a feature-length project set in the Breaking Bad universe, and it would begin production later this fall. Of course, plot details are hard to come by at the moment, but the rough synopsis indicates audiences will follow the escape of a kidnapped man on his journey for freedom. It’s currently going by the working title Greenbrier.
Cranston, of course, is a main reason why Breaking Bad continues to resonate 10 years after it first went on the air. His portrayal of Walter White was widely acclaimed, earning him four Emmys in the process. The series ended with Walter’s death, though fans remain interested in seeing him comeback. There’s always the possibility of a cameo in Better Call Saul (considering how the spinoff jumps around in the timeline), but now the movie presents another avenue. And Cranston’s game for it.

While on The Dan Patrick Show, Cranston discussed the Breaking Bad movie. The actor revealed he’s spoken to Gilligan about it, but doesn’t know much at this point:
“Yes, there appears to be a movie version of Breaking Bad. But I honestly have not even read the script. So I couldn’t tell you… If Vince Gilligan asked me to do it, sure, absolutely. He’s a genius.”
The latest updates for Greenbrier indicate it will be a sequel following Jesse Pinkman after the events of the Breaking Bad finale. So, if Walter is to appear, it would have to be in a flashback or dream sequence. That’ll entirely depend on what Gilligan has in mind. While he isn’t averse to including fun nods and Easter eggs to his previous works, any connections always organically fit into the story at hand. There’s a reason why Aaron Paul and Cranston have yet to cameo on Better Call Saul. In all likelihood, Gilligan would enjoy to work with Cranston one more time, but any return would have to be more than just cheap fan service. For those hoping to see Walter one more time, it’s encouraging Gilligan and Cranston have talked about the movie. Perhaps they’re trying to figure out how to make something work.
There’s no denying it would be a treat for longtime fans to see Cranston and Paul back together, years after audiences bid farewell to their iconic characters. However, a role for Walter, no matter how small, would run the risk of undermining the purpose of the movie. From the sound of things, the goal here is to craft a satisfying coda to Jesse’s story, which was left somewhat ambiguous as he sped away from Uncle Jack’s compound. The focus, then, should primarily be on him as he gets his life back on track. Walter White had his time and his story has been told. That being said, if anyone can make Cranston’s Breaking Bad comeback worth it, it’s Gilligan.
