The rules of golf have changed and you can bet that Bryson DeChambeau is ready to enjoy it.
A recent golf rule change now allows players to keep the pin or flag in the hole during their putt. Hitting the flag was previously a penalty of two strokes, which was a sufficient incentive to pull the pin whenever a player was within range of the ball.
The change should cut a bit of time for the average round of golf now that players are no longer forced to use the flag if they do not wish it, but it also allows them to use it basically like a panel while they are in the hole, partly stop the momentum of a balloon.
So should golfers now keep their pins inside for each putt? In an interview with Golf.com, DeChambeau announced its intention to leave the pin inside, with a very big exception near the American Open. The reason: science.
"It depends on the CoR, the coefficient of restitution of the flag," he said. "At the US Open, I'll take it out, and all the other events of the Tour, when it's fiberglass, I'll leave it inside and I'll bounce that ball against the flag if it's needed."
So, what is a "restitution coefficient?" To use a better-known term, it is essentially about the abundance or lack thereof.
According to DeChambeau, every PGA tour event except the US Open apparently uses fiberglass sticks, which only Bryson DeChambeau could think of. Meanwhile, the US Open would have used thicker metal sticks.
So when using a fiberglass flag, DeChambeau determined that it was better to keep the pin, while thicker metal sticks created a significant risk of bouncing the putt away from the hole.
This follows the conclusion of Golf.com's Golf Professor Dave Pelz, in which Pelz felt that golfers should "leave the flag in every time the rules allow it", unless the rules are too tilted towards you so the ball can not hold.
All of this makes sense, although the idea that DeChambeau is actually experimenting with beacon physics would not be so unusual. This is a physics student who plays with irons of the same length to preserve his striking plan. USGA has criticized him for using a compass to determine the true position of the holes. Of course, he will use science to determine whether he should keep a flag in a hole.
