ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills canceled Nathan Peterman on Monday, putting an end to the 2017 team 's fifth round pick choice, which has become known for its historically high interception rate.
The move came after the Bills decided to hand Matt Barkley over to Peterman in the 41-10 win against the New York Jets on Sunday. Barkley, whom the team signed on Oct. 31, completed 15 of 25 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
Peterman, 24, played eight games in eight seasons at Buffalo and started four starts. In 130 pass attempts in the regular season, Peterman threw three TDs and 12 interceptions. He also pitched an interception in one of his three pass attempts in the AFC playoffs defeat last season.
Of all the NFL shifts since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 with as many pass attempts, Peterman's interception rate of 9.23% is the third highest, behind those of Kim McQuilken (10, 7) and Don Horn (9,34). Peterman's pass mark of 32.5 is the third lowest among the quarterbacks with at least 130 successful attempts since the merger, behind those of McQuilken (17.9) and Scott Bull (24.8).
Peterman was the replacement for Tyrod Taylor last season before being named a starter for a Nov. 19 match against the Los Angeles Chargers. Peterman has launched five interceptions, becoming the first quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger to split five times in the first half, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Taylor replaced him at half-time.
Head coach Sean McDermott named Peterman coach of the first days of the season after hosting a training camp with AJ McCarron and rookie pick Josh Allen. McDermott expressed his optimism to Peterman after completing 80% of his pre-season passes with three touchdowns and one interception.
During a trip to Baltimore during week 1, Peterman completed five of his 18 passes for 24 yards and two interceptions before McDermott took him for a third in the third quarter of what became a defeat of 47-3 against the Ravens.
When Allen was injured at the elbow during a match in Houston on Oct. 14, Peterman replaced him and launched the touchdown pass. He then launched two interceptions, including one with the Texans for the decisive touchdown.
Peterman's last appearance at Buffalo was on Nov. 4, when he made three choices in a 41-9 loss to the Chicago Bears. Peterman completed 31 passes for a gain of 188 yards, the smallest number of times in a game played by an NFL quarterback since at least 1950.
Despite his choice of Barkley over Peterman in Sunday's game against the Jets, McDermott continued to stay by his side earlier Monday.
"I'm still confident in Nate," he said.
Without Peterman, the Bills will enter their remaining week with Allen, Barkley and Derek Anderson as three quarterbacks on their team of 53 players. McDermott said that Allen would begin when Buffalo host the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 25th.
