Buffalo Bills release quarterback Nathan Peterman

Once again, the Buffalo Bills are shuffling the quarterback room. This time, Nathan Peterman is on the move.

Monday evening, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Bills had released second-year quarterback Nathan Peterman. The move comes one day after the recently-signed Matt Barkley completed 60% of his passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns while leading the Bills to a blowout victory over the Jets.

This 41-10 win was by far, the most complete performance that Buffalo has put on this season, to the point that LeSean McCoy scored his first two touchdowns of the season. Barkley wasn’t perfect against the Jets, but he was decisive with his throws downfield and was accurate in critical moments. His touchdown to Zay Jones was dart into tight coverage where only the receiver could get the ball. Barkley easily outperformed Peterman despite being with the team for little more than a week.

The move to make Barkley the starter originally came to pass after Peterman struggled mightily against the Chicago Bears in a nightmare performance. The second-year quarterback only completed 31 of his 49 attempted passes for a lowly 188 yards and three interceptions, including yet another pick-six. Peterman has now thrown seven interceptions with only one touchdown in 2018, bringing his career total to only three touchdowns and a whopping 12 interceptions in only eight career games.

Peterman has struggled so much as a starting quarterback that other players are even chiming in. Former Bills quarterback EJ Manuel took a shot at Peterman on Instagram, lamenting the fact that he has a job while Manuel remains unemployed; but it’s not like coach Sean McDermott was starting Peterman because he believes he could be the next Tom Brady. Peterman was playing because the Bills have no one else to put under center.

When Allen was injured in Week 6 against the Houston Texans, Peterman was sent into the game for relief but struggled, throwing for just 61 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Heading into Week 7, McDermott was facing a conundrum with who to start under center. He elected for the recently-signed veteran Anderson instead of Peterman, but Anderson hasn’t performed very well either. In two games, he has recorded four interceptions and zero touchdowns.

Anderson suffered a concussion against the New England Patriots during a Monday night loss, so once again, it was Peterman time in Buffalo— and once again, it was a disaster. Enter Barkley, who turned in the best performance by a Bills quarterback this season.

With Peterman on the outs, the Bills will continue to roll with the former USC quarterback as long as Josh Allen is still recovering. The Bills currently have plans to make Allen the starter once again following the week 11 bye, but his health is by no means guaranteed.
