Kids from across the country made jokes breathtaking before Thanksgiving as they turned to their parents for their "tips".

They were participating in a viral farce called "turkey challenge," which encourages kids to ask their parents if it's possible to successfully microwave a 25-pound turkey. The "clueless" kids asked how long it would take to cook a turkey in the microwave, stating that they did not want to wait for "hours" for it to be roasted in the oven.

The question elicited various responses from confused and anxious seniors – the majority agreed that the turkey did not belong at all to the microwave.

The jokers mocked the responses received by displaying screenshots of their conversations. Some mothers called this a "joke" and said the question "did not even make sense", while fathers recommended that their children not "be dumb" and warn that " it would not work well.

But Butterball's answer may have been the most surprising of all.

The poultry brand said that a 25-pound turkey microwave was "a bit ambitious", but that a 12-pound turkey would not be "a challenge at all".

"We started using turkeys in the microwave even before the hashtags existed," Butterball joked on Twitter. "Call us … and we will guide you step by step."

Parents and children were surprised by this news – although many confessed that they would still not choose to use a microwave oven.

"Say what, Butterball claims you can actually turkey in the microwave," said a Twitter user.

"You could, but why would you do it?" another asked.

Butterball confirmed Tuesday to Fox News by e-mail that they were not bluffing – it's possible and "safe" to cook a much smaller turkey in the microwave. According to Butterball's experts, here are the steps to successfully cooking a 9-pound turkey.

  • Thaw your turkey first – do not put frozen turkey in the microwave!
  • Place the turkey breast down on a microwaveable dish or plate.
  • Microwave 4 minutes per pound at full power (36 minutes)
  • Remove the drops
  • Turn the breast up and cook at 50% power for 8 minutes per pound at 4 intervals, which is about every 18 minutes (checking the turkey temperature at each interval).
  • Brush and add a browning sauce for a golden brown look

However, anyone who cooks a turkey this year – in the microwave or oven – should be aware of the risks of eating undercooked meat.

"The most common bacteria that people tend to associate with undercooked poultry is salmonella. However, poultry can also carry campylobacter, E. Coli and other bacteria, "explained Dena Champion, a dietician at the Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University, at Fox News.

Every year in the United States, about 1.2 million people are infected with Salmonella and about 23,000 are hospitalized, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). About 1 million cases of Salmonella infections each year are caused by food, the agency noted.
