C.J. Beathard is not Joe Montana, but he can keep the 49ers competitive

It's safe to say that no one expected C. J. Beathard to play in his mind Monday night against the Packers. The substitutes do not expect a loss against Aaron Rodgers, but that's exactly what Beathard did when he completed 16 of 23 passes for 245 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 steals in the 33-30 loss to the Packers.

Upon entering the game, Beathard was ranked 24th in yards per attempt with a score of 7.1. He absolutely beat that goal by 10.7 against Green Bay.

Kyle Shanahan's plan was for open-air shots all night, but Beathard still had to execute and make the shots. Even though a late interception ruined what was from afar best match of Beathard's career, it was still a special night for him.

The Beathard-Goodwin connection could not be stopped

In the first half, Marquise Goodwin had a 67-yard touchdown and a 30-yard touchdown. On the 67-yard touchdown, Beathard kicked an absolute penny to catch Goodwin in the wake.

Sending a deep and fast threat with more than five blockers is a sure way to try to create a great game in the field. This piece was a staple of Kyle Shanahan's offenses in Atlanta.

The 49ers did not have a fictitious action on the game, but they were well protected, the halves remaining to block. Using the backs as additional blockers gives the quarterback more time to pick up the ball.

At the second touchdown, Goodwin launched what was invented as a "blazing road" or a "pinched road". This looks like a traditional route after the corner, but the recipient flattens his route, heading to the corner of the end zone. This slight adjustment puts a lot of stress on the cornerback to find its balance and close the ball.

When Shanahan was in Atlanta, he enjoyed running these routes with Julio Jones. Players with explosive speed and strong leadership skills, like Julio and Goodwin, thrive on these roads.

Goodwin was not the only receiver 49er to get rid of his big win against the Packers. While no one had the right Goodwin stats line set up, a handful of players were able to capture pieces in the air.

The five 49ers receivers who caught passes had at least one catch going 10 yards. Rear Kyle Juszcyzk received a 21-yard pass on a deep course, but unfortunately he fumbled and placed the Packers in an ideal position on the 49ers pitch.

Beathard was in tune with all the offensive all night long. The ball came out quickly, accurately, and he took advantage of the holes in the Packers blanket. At the very moment when it seemed that the 49ers would win, the shot would be in the foot.

Inadvertent turnovers slow down Beathard's game

After a penalty of unnecessary brutality imposed by the Packers (while the match was tied at 30), the 49ers had an excellent position on the field near the midfield to potentially win the match. The clock stayed at 1:49, the Packers had no time out and Robbie Gould had not missed a kick throughout the match. If the 49ers could sneak into the end zone, they would be upset Monday night.

Then the wheels fell off the roller coaster Beathard.

Beathard managed another deep pass to Marquise Goodwin, but the placement was a little too far inside and he fell into the arms of Packers cornerback Kevin King.

It was the only really poor pitch of Beathard in the night. Kevin King had a good game on the ball, but if the shot was on Goodwin's outer shoulder, he would have had a better chance of taking a shot.

Finished party. Beathard was forced to watch from the sidelines while Aaron Rodgers and the Packers were running on the pitch to try to score 27 points.

Beathard was off for most of the game, until the last minute of regulation. Even if the game ended with a disastrous interception, it does not take away the whole game that Beathard had against Green Bay.

It's not impossible that Beathard can do it again. He looks much more comfortable in the second year with Shanahan and the 49ers. Last year, Beathard averaged 6.4 yards per attempt before being replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo. This year, Beathard averages 7.8 yards per attempt – tied with Mitchell Trubisky (13th). With the explosion that occurred this year in the NFL, Beathard could absolutely have another explosive game as he did tonight.

Hopefully Beathard will be able to pick up where he stopped next week against the … Los Angeles Rams.
