The Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy was killed and another was shot by a suspect outside the Pep Boys auto parts store in Rancho Cordova on Monday, Sheriff Scott Jones said.

MP Mark Stasyuk, 27, died Monday afternoon after being shot in the upper body, Jones said near the crime scene, about three hours after the shot. Stasyuk was a veteran of the 4 and a half year old department.

Assistant Julie Robertson, 28, was shot in the arm, Jones said. Robertson, a two-and-a-half year veteran, should recover fully from his injuries.

Both MPs responded to a call from store employees about a disorder, Jones said. They did not know that the suspect was armed and were shot as soon as they arrived.

"They were coming to what we considered a routine call from a business owner in conflict with a customer," Jones said.

The suspect then fled and was shot dead by two other deputies, who ordered him to stop, Jones said. The suspect, who has not been identified, is in detention and was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center.

He was alert and spoke to the police when he was detained, Jones said.

The initial shooting took place before 2 pm in the area of Folsom Boulevard and Olson Drive in a Pep Boys auto parts store, based on audio obtained via Broadcastify. At approximately 13:50, dispatchers were informed that shots had been fired at the Folsom Boulevard store.

About a minute later, the listener states that the suspect is heading west. A male officer later states that the suspect was apprehended in the parking lot of the nearby furniture store. "OK, we have the suspect down. We have it at the end of the gun, "said the unidentified MP.

"He is lying face down on the floor," said an assistant dispatcher. "His weapon is north of him about 25 feet from his location."

A female officer, presumably Robertson, can then be heard reporting that her partner was shot and fell, and that she was also shot and wounded. "Are you touching your arm and your partner is down?" Confirms the dispatcher.

During the incident, a passer-by was shot in the back and sustained non-fatal injuries, Jones said.

Jones said that only one suspect was in detention Monday afternoon.

The shooting took place on the eve of the CopsWest training and exhibition, which was expected to attract more than 1,000 law enforcement officers to the Sacramento Convention Center. Black Lives Matter organized a demonstration and a series of protesters on Tuesday to protest against African police shootings, including Stephon Clark, an unarmed gunman killed at Meadowview six months earlier.

Jones suggested that residents in mourning after Stanyuk's death go to the convention center to support the cops.

"We have planned a protest tomorrow at a statewide police conference in Sacramento," Jones said. "I know people have this urge to do what they can … One of the things you can do is go there. Meet at the convention center tomorrow between 11 and 1 and show your support for the forces of order.

The spokesman for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Captain Chris Vestal, said that four people had been transported to the hospital and that a fifth person had refused medical transportation.
