President Trump and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom (D) exchanged insults Thursday night, each calling for a clown.

At a noisy gathering in Las Vegas, the president referred to Newsom, who is running for governorship, in a speech on Democrats and Illegal Immigration.

"Democrats want to give free welfare and health care to illegal aliens," Trump said. "What do you think of this Californian clown who is running for governorship? He wants open borders, then he wants to give them health care, education, everything. "

Newsom fought back in a tweet that started, "lol, hi @realDonaldTrump."

"Interesting description of the type that literally encloses children like Pennywise," he wrote, referring to Trump's zero-tolerance policy at the border that led to the separation of migrant families.

Pennywise is the terrifying clown of Stephen King's "It", who attacks the children of Derry, Maine, about every 27 years.

Newsom has attached a video clip of Trump calling a clown to his tweet.

He is the first Californian politician insulted by Trump.

In March, on his first state trip as president, Trump said Governor Jerry Brown was a "nice guy" but was doing a "terrible job".

"I think Governor Brown is doing a very bad job in California," Trump said, visiting eight prototypes of his long-promised border wall southeast of downtown San Diego. "They have the highest taxes in the United States. The place is totally out of control. You have sanctuary cities where criminals live in sanctuary towns.
