An armed gunman from Bakersfield, California, killed five people – including his wife – on Wednesday night in a murderous madness across the city.
The series of shootings in Bakersfield – about 115 miles north of Los Angeles – began around 5:20 pm. and were held in about 15 minutes, said Sheriff Donny Youngblood of Kern County at a press conference Wednesday evening.
The authorities did not immediately disclose the names of the victims or the shooter.
"Of course, there is one type of situation that has caused a lot of anger to the husband," he said.
He added later: "We are trying to find the connection. Obviously, these are not random shots.
The events began to unfold when the suspect, armed with a handgun, and his wife entered a trucking company, said Sheriff Youngblood. They confronted a man to the company; The husband shot and killed the man, then returned and shot his wife, said the sheriff.
Soon another man arrived at the scene and the shooter fired at him, said the sheriff. After a brief chase, the gunman shot this man in front of a sporting goods store.
The gunman then continued his way to a nearby house, where he confronted and then shot dead two other men, said the sheriff. He then took a vehicle with a woman and a child inside. The woman and the child finally managed to escape, said the sheriff.
Soon, a sheriff's deputy spotted the gunman driving on a highway. The shooter got away and the member confronted him. The sheriff said his deputy "confronted him with a gun" but did not discharge him. In the middle of the confrontation, the shooter killed himself, said the sheriff.
"You do not go randomly to a certain residence," he said. "I'm comfortable enough, there will be a connection between all these players."
The sheriff's officials stated that although there were at least four crime scenes and dozens of witnesses, he was not aware of injuries other than those that had been shot.
"Six people lost their lives in a very short time," said Sheriff Youngblood. "It's the new normal."
