California makes the strictest Net neutrality law and DOJ pursues – Altice USA (NYSE: ATUS)

A last minute signature by California Governor Jerry Brown gave the state the most stringent network neutrality law tonight and immediately sued the Trump administration.

The law was passed by the legislature and went to Brown's office on August 31; he had until the evening to sign it.

Donors to the bill were not worried about the delay, suggesting that similar high-impact bills often waited until the last minute for signing.

In the meantime, the Department of Justice immediately filed a lawsuit. "States do not regulate interstate commerce – the federal government does," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying the FCC has the sole authority to create rules for broadband providers.

Like California's auto emissions laws, California's new rules could become de facto rules for the country if suppliers apply the same rules to other states.
