The Department of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that the Canadian Foreign Minister had phoned his Pakistani counterpart a day earlier to discuss Asia Bibi, a Christian recently acquitted by the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case. During the phone call, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs appreciated the courageous decision of the Supreme Court to acquit Bibi and the "positive speech" of the Prime Minister following the verdict, the spokesman said. A day earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government was in talks with Pakistan to potentially offer asylum in Bibi. "We are in discussions with the Pakistani government," Trudeau said during an interview in Paris, where he was attending a peace conference organized by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Foreign Minister Qureshi also met the sister of Dr. Afia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist imprisoned in the United States at the Foreign Office. During the meeting, efforts to bring Dr. Aafia back were discussed.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs informed Dr Fouzia Siddiqui of the efforts made in Dr Aafia's case. "To ensure the well-being of Dr Aafia, we have made consular visits," he said. "We have also spoken to the Pakistan Consulate General regarding the protection of Dr. Aafia's legal and human rights," he added.
