A Canadian marijuana company has been authorized by the US federal government to export medicinal cannabis to California for scientific research.
Tilray Inc. and Dr. Fatta Nahab, Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, who is behind the research, believe that this is the first time that the drug Enforcement give the green light to a Canadian producer to export a cannabis study drug south of the border, The Toronto Star reported. Getting approval was a multi-month process that also required the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
"It's very meaningful," said Dr. Catherine Jacobson, director of clinical research at Tilray, in the Canadian newspaper. "This is the first time a Canadian (licensed producer) has demonstrated to the FDA that a study drug produced in Canada from the cannabis plant can meet its standards."
Tilray shares have increased by up to 28% with news stories, Bloomberg reported. The significant gains have allowed the British Columbia-based company to significantly increase its value, adding about $ 3 billion and bringing the total value to more than $ 14 billion. The boost has pushed it above the Canopy Growth Corp. Cannabis Growth Corp., which means that Tilray is now the most valuable cannabis company in the world.
Researchers based in the United States who wanted to study marijuana have already used supplies from the National Institute for Drug Abuse Control (NIDA). However, Nahab explained to the Canadian media that it is usually a dried bud. This made it difficult to control the dosage without an oral NIDA alternative.
"We have a fixed, very consistent dosing system, and that will really help us move the field forward a lot more," said Nahab about the Tilray product, a capsule containing a cannabinoid formulation containing the following active ingredients: CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), according to the CBC team, with the Nahab team selecting the Canadian company from a list of four.

The researcher and his team will use cannabis in a study on essential tremors, a common neurological disorder that causes a tremor of the body. The research was funded in part by Tilray and the Essential Tremor International Foundation. Clinical trials are expected to begin in 2019, involving 16 adult participants.
Recreational marijuana has been legalized in nine US states and the nation's capital, and medicinal cannabis has been legalized in more than 30 states. Nevertheless, the federal government still classifies the pot as a List 1 medicine, making it totally illegal.
Canada decided in June to legalize marijuana nationally, which will come into effect next month. But US officials warned that Canadian marijuana users, workers and investors could face US life bans due to the current federal law. Previously, cannabis investors from other countries, such as Israel, were prevented from entering the United States.
