Max Domi scored the ultimate goal with 21.1 seconds left, as the Montreal Canadiens host scored three goals in the final four minutes and beat the Washington Capitals 6-4 on Thursday night.
The Canadians quickly took the lead and led 1-0 and 3-1 early in the second period, before Washington scored three goals in a row. Washington had a lead of one goal until Montreal focused for those three late goals.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored the second of his two goals in 3:04 and tied the game four. Domi then stole the puck on the defensive side, pulled up the ice and fired Goalie Braden Holtby's glove, which gave the Canadians a 5-4 lead.
Joel Armia (a goal, an assist) added an empty goal for the 6-4 final.
Alex Ovechkin and Lars Eller both scored two goals for Washington in the final of his four-game trek.
Montreal took a 1-0 lead when Kotkaniemi took a quick pass from Armia and snapped a shot over Holtby at 2:28 of the match. It was his first goal in the NHL.
But Washington drew when Eller scored at 6:16. Matt Niskanen (two assists) fired a shot near the blue line that was diverted to Eller in the left circle, and he easily put it aside to get 1-1.
The second period was rich in goals, starting with two goals from Brendan Gallagher of Montreal. He scored 32 seconds after the start of the period, then at 3:06 to give the Canadians a 3-1 lead while the Capitals seemed in trouble.
But that changed quite quickly. Ovechkin reduced the lead to 3-2 at 6:49 by scoring a pass past Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Then, just 70 seconds later, Eller tied the game with a goal from Brett Connolly. Washington then took a 4-3 lead on the second goal of the period against Ovechkin, who had somehow redirected Dmitry Orlov's shot in the lead at 7:07 of the end.
