The Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, like many other experts, believes that Mikey Garcia has a very difficult task: move to the welterweight division to challenge the IBF world champion, Errol Spence.
The contest was officially announced Tuesday and will take place on March 16 at the AT & T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be an à la carte event of Fox Sports.
Garcia, who currently holds the WBC Lightweight title at 135 pounds, earns 12 pounds more than Spence at 147.
Garcia won the world featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and junior welterweight titles. And he wants to win a world title in a fifth weight division.
He has not fought past the 140-pound limit and has won victories in this division over Adrien Broner and Sergey Lipinets.
Spence is a very great welterweight and considered one of the most skilled fighters in the sport.
Garcia, although considered one of the best pound-to-pound boxing fighters, is a very big outsider in the competition.
And Canelo thinks that size is perhaps the big difference of the fight – and he thinks Garcia has a very difficult task.
"I think both of them are good fighters, but Mikey has little experience in fighting the welterweight.I do not know if that is the first [fight for him at 147]but that could make the difference, "Canelo told ESPN Deportes.
"Being left-handed and being at 147 for a long time will be an advantage (for Spence) .It will be a good fight, and my support, as always, is with the Mexican."
Canelo, who holds WBC and WBA middleweight titles, makes his own jump in weight on Dec. 15. He is trying to become world champion in three divisions when he challenges world champion super middleweight WAB "regular" Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden.
