The Campbell Soup Co. distanced itself from the inflammatory remarks of one of its leaders, former Senate Secretary Kelly Johnston, on Twitter on Tuesday about the large group of migrants heading to the Mexican border.
In the tweet, Johnston hinted that George Soros' Open Society foundations orchestrated the migration of thousands of people and even controlled "the saddle location." Johnston accused the group of "having an army of US immigration lawyers waiting at the border."
The tweet and Johnston's account have since been deleted. Johnston, Campbell's vice president of government affairs, did not immediately respond to a request from the Washington Post for comment.
In an email to The Post, Campbell's said he did not support the opinions expressed by Johnston in the tweet. "The opinions expressed by Mr. Johnston on Twitter are his personal opinions and do not represent Campbell Soup Company's position," the company said.
Soros, a liberal philanthropist, is a frequent target of the far right and is often the subject of conspiracy theories. On Monday, an explosive device was planted in Soros' mailbox at his home in New York, authorities said. The device was handled safely and the case was transferred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Johnston, who served as Senate Secretary under Robert Dole (MD), then Senate Majority Leader, has been with Campbell's since 2002. He oversees soup kitchen trade associations and lobbies the US government in the areas of trade and agriculture.
Johnston also held several administrative positions with the Republican Party and was also responsible for communication for the National Food Processors Association, according to his Bloomberg biography.
Although it was removed, images of Johnston's comments were broadcast on Twitter, provoking outrage. Many called for his dismissal and threatened to boycott Campbell's products.
Other images of tweets removed showed that Johnston's comments were not the first he had made about the migrant caravan or Soros. In a tweet earlier this month, Johnston seemed to be laughing at the idea of a hurricane putting the lives of vulnerable migrants at risk.
