Caravan of migrants rushes to Mexican border and clashes with police

Members of a caravan of Honduran migrants clashed with police Friday after crossing a border fence between Guatemala and Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, about 50 migrants managed to pass riot police assembled on the Mexican side before tear gas and other devices were deployed and the crowd was pushed back.

"We need you to stop the assault," police ordered through speakers while clashes continued, according to the AP.

Mexican police arrested the large caravan on the border between Mexico and Guatemala under increasing pressure from the Trump administration to prevent the caravan of several thousand people from reaching the US border.

A large number of caravan migrants plan to seek asylum in the United States, while others wish to do the same in Mexico.

"I want to travel to the United States to contribute to this country," said a caravan migrant to the AP, "to do any kind of work, pick up trash."

The head of the Mexican Federal Police told the press services that his forces intended to let in only those with passports and valid visas, while seeking refugee status in one of the two countries could come in orderly groups of 10 to 30 people.

"It will be in the conditions that have been announced since the beginning," said Manelich Castilla. "Ordered, with established procedures, never by violence or force by tempting a group of people."

The president pointed to the caravan as proof of the risks of "open border" immigration policy, which he accused Democrats of supporting.
