Washington's tight vote for Tuesday's elections includes four initiatives, 10 congressional races, one US Senate seat and more than 100 legislative contests.
Here are the highlights:
CARBON TAX AMONG HIGH PROFILE MEASURES
The 1631 Initiative would charge large carbon emitters for fossil fuels used or sold in the state or on electricity produced in the state starting in 2020. Opponents collected more than $ 31 million, mainly from oil companies, a national record for initiatives taken on proposal.
Voters will also decide the fate of I-1639, which strengthens the background check of buyers of semi-automatic rifles; The 1634 initiative, supported by the soft drink industry, would prohibit local governments from imposing new taxes on soft drinks or groceries; and Initiative 940, a measure to improve police training on de-escalation tactics and eliminate the requirement for prosecutors to prove that officers acted maliciously to obtain a conviction in negligent shootings.
DEMS ARE LOOKING FOR FLIP GOP SEATS
The openly disputed seat in Congress's 8th district has been one of the country's most expensive, as Democrats are considering a potential lift that could help determine control of the US House. Dr. Kim Schrier, Democrat and Pediatrician, and Republican Dino Rossi, a former senator who had already failed as governor and US Senator, are trying to replace retired Republican Representative Dave Reichert.
More than $ 25 million was invested in the 8th district race, mostly from outside groups.
In the fifth congressional district, Republican leader Cathy McMorris Rodgers will face Democrat Lisa Brown, former Chancellor of Washington State University, who was previously Senate Majority Leader. In the third constituency, Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler faces a daunting challenge from Democrat Carolyn Long, a professor of political science at the Washington State University campus in Vancouver.
CANTWELL PREFERRED SENATE CONTEST
Former GOP President Susan Hutchison calls Democrat Senator Maria Cantwell, who holds three terms. A public survey showed Cantwell with a comfortable lead as she seeks her fourth term.
LEGISLATURE OF STATE
The 98 seats in the House of States must be elected and voters will decide 25 out of 49 seats in the Senate. While Democrats have most offices in Washington, the political division in the Legislative Assembly is much narrower: Democrats currently hold an advantage of a Senate seat and a two-seat advantage in the House .
Democrats hope to expand their margins.
VOTING INFORMATION
