The Friday night game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium should be sponsored by the letter K, as there would be more than a few withdrawals.
If young righthanders Walker Buehler of the Dodgers and Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals launch Friday as they did on August 22 during their clash with Chavez Ravine, the races and solid contact could be much appreciated in a pennant match – pressure from race.
Buehler (6-5, 3.09 ERA) fired seven shutouts in the Cardinals game last month, allowing only three hits and two walks by beating nine. Flaherty (8-6, 2.92) held a non-hitter until Joc Pederson made a solo run with a draw at the bottom of the sixth. Flaherty is the only one to have managed two runs and caught 10 passengers.
Los Angeles has set foot in the last two innings of the night. Tyler O Neill defeated Scott Alexander in the second and Paul DeJong shot Kenley Jansen two points in the ninth to give St. Louis a 3-1 victory.
The Cardinals (81-66) led the Dodgers (80-67) in a game in second place in the Wild League with a 9-7 win over Los Angeles on Thursday night. The Dodgers led from start to finish, including 8-1 at one point, but they could not expire until Matt Adams clung to first place as the race's potential was over.
Manny Machado played for Los Angeles with three hits, including a double and his 34th circuit of the year in the seventh inning.
"I just tried to ride there and be myself, to have quality bats," Machado told Sportsnet LA. "Every game counts, every game counts now, part of it can change things, so we have to be on top, we did everything we needed today."
The Dodgers, who sometimes had terrible difficulty hitting with riders by scoring a position over the past month, set the tone for the match with an excellent bat in this situation in the first run. David Freese charged left-handed Austin Gomber for 14 shots, scratched nine before doubling a hat-trick on the left-field line.
Freese, who is acclaimed at every bat in St. Louis because he was the most valuable player of the 2011 World Series Cardinals, was acquired just before the August 31st waiver date in Pittsburgh.

The Cardinals plan to catch every game in the series except Saturday at 12:05. start after the Friday night game.
"He's very confident he can adapt to what he's doing so he does not have a setback, which we clearly do not need," said Mike Shildt, St. Louis manager, about Molina.
