A large area of low pressure covering part of Central America and the Western Caribbean could develop slowly over the weekend and early next week, the National Hurricane Center reported.

On Wednesday evening (3 October), high winds prevented the formation of tropical cyclones, the Hurricane Center said.

"Environmental conditions could become less hostile this weekend and early next week, which would slow the development of the region as the system moves to the northwest," the report said.

The probability of tropical training was 30% over the next five days.

In the central Atlantic, Hurricane Leslie was heading north, nearly 3 mph. A turn to the east was expected this weekend. The hurricane was 495 miles east-southeast of Bermuda.

Maximum sustained winds were around 80 mph with stronger gusts.

"A slight strengthening is expected in the coming days, but a slow downward trend is expected to begin by Friday," said the Hurricane Center.

Large swells generated by Leslie are expected to hit parts of the southeastern coast of the United States, Bermuda and the Bahamas over the next few days.
