(Note: this article contains information about the first part of "The Walking Dead.")
Well, it's official – starting with the premiere of Season 9 of The Walking Dead, there's a new major novel, which seems to have its share of complications.
This romance is between Carol (Melissa McBride) and King Ezekiel (Khary Payton), what the show began to do little by little. In the first episode of the new season, "A New Beginning," we find that no matter how much time has elapsed since the end of the war with the Saviors, Carol and Ezekiel are now very close.

That Carol and Ezekiel are an element is both formidable and terrible. That's great, because Ezekiel is probably the best post-apocalyptic guy in The Walking Dead, as well as the best, most stable, and most caring of the leaders currently in office. He deserves good things, just like Carol, who could be the end of the badass of the world. She has also gone through a lot of shit over the years.
But it's terrible because, at least at the moment, the Carol-Ezekiel relationship seems to put an end to a feeling the fans were hoping would materialize forever: Carol and Daryl, or "Caryl."
Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol have very close, interesting and almost always tacit relationships. However, even if there is really tension between them, their relationships have never become romantic. And now, as things progress in the rest of season 9, it seems like it never does. It's because halfway to the first, Ezekiel asks Carol to marry him.

On the other hand, perhaps what we see in the first episode of "The Walking Dead," Season 9, is a setup for Carol and Daryl to finally come to terms with what they think about each other.
The first hint that Carol might not be quite ready to settle with Ezekiel is the fact that she is clearly opposed to this idea; after all, she does not agree to marry him. Obviously, Carol is struggling to engage in much more than being in a stable relationship with Ezekiel and carries a lot of emotional baggage. She spent a lot of time in the last two seasons standing out from her friends and even considering leaving the group. Although she has recovered well, Carol still has some distance problems, even in the first episode, now Ezekiel at arm's length.
This is most evident when Ezekiel suffers an imminent death experience in the middle of the episode, having nearly sunk into death to be eaten by walkers. He is saved by Daryl and the rest of the group and, after the fact, asks Carol to marry him. It is a hindrance, partly because she does not want Ezekiel's proposal to be inspired by the emotions of impending death. But at the end of the episode, Carol heads for Sanctuary and takes a little time outside of Ezekiel; she says it's because Daryl and the others need help, but Ezekiel suspects he's pushing Carol too hard with his proposal.

So, already, "The Walking Dead" is being put in place, while Ezekiel and Carol are together, she is not as deeply in the relationship as him. At the very least, Carol has issues to deal with (such as trust and fear of losing loved ones, what we have been seeing for some time). There is a conflict in their relationship that will only grow further.
And then there is the situation of Daryl.
Later in the episode, Carol talks to Daryl about Ezekiel's proposal, which tells her that she deserves happiness. We see them having a moment of platonic proximity, and it is clear that the pair is still tight.

Carol's struggle to get closer to Ezekiel, then to speak to Daryl immediately, seems rather suggestive. We can also expect that things are not easy for Carol and Ezekiel, that's all. It's "The Walking Dead" after all. Maybe that's because we see Carol struggling with her feelings, or maybe the reason Carol can not fully engage is because of how she feels about another, even though she do not quite understand it.
And if we talk about what would make a drama and conflict powerful for the series, and twist fans in knots to try to decide what they think, there is nothing more powerful than the love triangle between three characters favorite fans. So maybe the fact that Carol is with Ezekiel does not really mean that "Caryl" is completely out of the table.
Again, it's "The Walking Dead" and no one can stay happy for long. If Daryl and Carol finally meet, as the fans wish, one of them would be killed immediately afterwards.

Some time later, Rick comes out of his coma to find that the apocalypse has passed and that the dead return in the form of zombies. He leaves the hospital and meets Morgan Jones and his son, Duane, who help him and tell him about the end of the world.

Rick gets trapped in Atlanta (season 1)
After leaving the Jones, Rick goes to Atlanta in the hope of finding his family, but the zombies trap him under a tank. He is saved by Glenn Rhee and meets other survivors, including T-Dog, Andrea and Merle. Rick and the others escape a camp outside the city, but the racist Merle is handcuffed on the roof and strollers rush into the building.

Meet at the camp (season 1)
Back in Atlanta, Rick finds his wife, Lori, and his son, Carl, who survived with Shane's help. Lori and Shane became close in Rick's absence, thinking Rick would never wake up. They also meet Daryl Dixon, who is not happy that his brother Merle is left behind. Rick promises to return to Atlanta and save Merle, but they discover that he cut his hand to escape the handcuffs and disappeared.

Walkers attack camp (Season 1)
When they return from their search for Merle, the team discovers that marchers have attacked the camp, killed and bit several people. The survivors decided to head to the CDC after a debate between Rick and Shane. Lori sits next to Rick.

CDC explodes (Season 1)
The survivors found at the CDC a scientist, Jenner, who was studying the epidemic but found nothing useful. The building explodes when the current is exhausted and Jenner chooses to die with it, giving the survivors a chance to end their suffering. They escape, but not until Jenner whispers to Rick that everyone is infected and anyone who dies will become a walker – even if he's not bitten.

Drive to Fort Benning (Season 2)
Carol's daughter, Sophia, is lost as the group hides from a herd of walkers. Carl is accidentally hit by a hunter. The man who fired at him, Otis, brings the group back to a farm belonging to Hershel and his family, who is collecting them. Hershel operates Carl and saves him.

The slaughter of the barn (season 2)
In the end, Hershel and his family kept walkers in the Greene family barn in hopes of healing them. Rick and Shane argue, let the walkers out, then kill them all. Meanwhile, Lori begins to think that Shane was dangerous and killed Otis.

Rick vs. Shane (Season 2)
The relationship between Shane and Rick continues to deteriorate as they ponder the killing of Otis and how to treat their enemies. Shane ends up organizing a trick to lure Rick into a field, while they're looking for a missing enemy that they've captured. Rick ends up killing Shane instead, and later, Carl kills the zombie Shane, who returns. At about the same time, Dale, another survivor, is killed by a walker, carrying a huge blow to the group.

Leave the farm (season 2)
A herd of walkers invades the farm, causing the flight of all and the death of some. The group meets on the road where the season has started, but Andrea is still missing. Rick reveals that he killed Shane and told everyone that they can leave if they wish, but they stay with him, "This is no longer a democracy." Meanwhile, Michonne, brandishing the katana, finds and rescues Andrea as she flees the farm.

Discovering the prison (season 3)
Seven months later, struggling to find food and shelter, Rick's group falls into an abandoned prison. Inside, Hershel is bitten by a walker and Rick amputates his leg to save him. Then they discover a locked cafeteria where five detainees are arrested.

Looking for Woodbury (Season 3)
Meanwhile, Michonne finds medication and rescues Andrea from an intense fever. The two are then discovered by Merle Dixon, who survived Atlanta. He takes them to Woodbury, an idyllic town run by the governor. It has a nice exterior appearance but is actually ruthless behind the scenes.

Death of Lori, birth of Judith (Season 3)
Rick and his company continue to empty the prison. Two of the prisoners are killed and a third is locked out. Rick lets the last two, Axel and Oscar, stay in jail. Hershel survives his amputation, but Andrew, the prisoner who has been thrown to the outside, lets in more walkers and raises an alarm. In the chaos, Maggie gives Lori an emergency Caesarean section to save her baby (which is actually Shane, not Rick), but Lori, and Carl has to stop him from turning.

Rick loses it (Season 3)
After losing Lori, Rick searches him in the jail of the prison, where he kills a few dozen marchers. In a disturbed state, he imagines hearing Lori's voice on the phone. Michonne leaves Woodbury because she does not trust the governor. Merle pursues her but finds Glenn and Maggie stocking up and catching them.

Save Glenn and Maggie (Season 3)
With Michonne's help, Rick and his team enter Woodbury to rescue Glenn and Maggie, but not before the governor threatens them to get the prison's location. Michonne almost killed the governor, stabbing him in the eyes, but Andrea prevents him from completing it. The group also saves the captured Daryl, but refuses to bring Merle back with them. Daryl leaves with Merle instead but soon separates from him.

Ready for war (season 3)
Back at the prison, the new survivors Sasha and Tyreese, as well as a few others, arrive and Hershel picks them up. They end up leaving when Rick hallucines Lori and then screams after her, thinking they are not welcome. The governor attacks the prison and kills survivors, but Daryl and Merle seem to help them fight them. The governor is preparing for war, but Andrea wants to negotiate with peace.

War with Woodbury (Season 3)
The governor captures Andrea after she tries to leave and questions him. In the meantime, he says that there will be a peace with the prison if Rick returns Michonne. Rick steps back, but Merle kidnaps Michonne to bring her back to Woodbury. Halfway, she convinces him to release her, and after him, Merle attacks the governor, who kills him. The governor attacks the prison, but is ambushed by Rick's people. The Woodbury soldiers are running away and do not want to fight the prison anymore. The governor massacred many. Andrea kills herself after being bitten by escaping from Woodbury.

Illness at the prison (season 4)
The Woodbury survivors join the prison with the governor in exile. Things are peaceful, but a bruised influenza virus starts killing people, causing an epidemic of ambulation in the prison. Rick discovers that Carol killed and burned two sick people before he could turn around and exile the prison. Glenn is infected, but Daryl returns from a stock of drugs just in time to treat everyone.

Governor kills Hershel (Season 4)
After removing Hershel and Michonne, the governor arrives at the prison. When Rick says the two groups could live in peace, the governor cuts his head at Hershel. The governor is killed in the battle, but the marchers rush into the prison and everyone runs away. Survivors see signs for a place called "Terminus" and go to their destination.

Glenn meets Abraham (Season 4)
Once they escaped, Glenn and one of Governor's people, Tara, met with Abraham, who accompanied Rosita and Eugene, a man who claims to be a scientist familiar with the epidemic. Meanwhile, Carol kills one of the surviving children, Lizzie, after Lizzie killed another child because she believes that walkers are still people.

Captured at Terminus (Season 4)
The different groups of survivors finally arrive at Terminus. Although at first the Terminus group looks kind, they take it to Rick and the other survivors when he realizes that they have items owned by Glenn and Maggie. Everyone is placed in a train car, where Glenn and Maggie are detained. It turns out that people from Terminus eat people.

Escaping Terminus (Season 5)
Before survivors of the Terminus can kill and eat Rick's group, Carol unleashes an explosion outside the camp that creates a distraction. Rick and his group escape and later find a church where they rescue Father Gabriel from the hikers. Some members of the Terminus Survivors group kidnap Bob, a member of Rick's group, in the night and eat his leg, then send it back. In turn, Rick succeeds in finding and killing Gareth, the leader of the Terminus group, and the remaining members of his group.

Eugene reveals he is a liar (Season 5)
Several members of the group try to take Eugene to Washington DC, where they think he will be able to heal the plague of walkers. He finally admits to having lied about being a scientist in order to get people to protect him. At the same time, Hershel's daughter Beth finds out that she was "saved" by a group of police officers and survivors operating in the hospital, but she has to work to pay off her debt.

Beth is killed (Season 5)
Rick and his group find out where Beth was taken (at that time, Carol was also captured) and kidnap three policemen to arrange a prisoner exchange. When they do, Dawn, the head of the hospital, tries to change the agreement to recover Noah, a boy who escaped him. Beth stabs Dawn to protect Noah, and Dawn accidentally kills her. In response, Daryl kills Dawn, but the other officers call a truce and Rick's group leaves, shaken.

Discovering Alexandria (Season 5)
Rick's group follows the Abraham team towards the DC, but never succeeds. Instead, they meet Aaron, a survivor of the fortified community of Alexandria. Rick and his group are invited to stay to help the survivors of Alexandria, who have not experienced many difficulties. Rick's group is struggling to adapt to an easier life.

Resume Alexandria (Season 5)
Deanna, the leader of Alexandria, fears that Rick's group is too powerful and Rick's group begins to think that Alexandria is too weak. But Rick ends up killing a lot of walkers who accidentally enter the city. When Jessie's drunk abusive husband, Pete, attacks Rick with Michonne's sword, he eventually kills Deanna's husband, Reg. In response, Rick kills Pete with Deanna's permission. Morgan Jones comes back and stays in the community.

Walker's career (season 6)
With quieter strains in Alexandria, Rick discovers a huge career full of walkers that someone had stuck. This is the reason why Alexandria was not attacked by the walkers, but now the blockades give way. Rick creates a plan to keep the marchers out of Alexandria, but that does not work in the last moments and some people are killed. About half of the walkers are taken, while the other half turn to Alexandria.

Wolves attack Alexandria (season 6)
At the same time, a group of crazy survivors called the wolves attack Alexandria and engage in a killing. Finally, Rick's team returns and, with the help of Carol and the other survivors, fights. The marchers arrive shortly after, because of the noise caused by the wolf attack, and the survivors of Alexandria unite to protect their home. During the same period, Abraham, Daryl and Sasha meet a group of bikers trying to steal them, but Daryl kills them all with a recovered grenade found.

Meeting Jesus (Season 6)
During the cleanup, Daryl and Rick meet a survivor named Paul, whom everyone calls Jesus because of his hair and beard. He steals a refueling truck from them, but after chasing and fighting, Daryl and Rick knock him out and bring him back to Alexandria. Jesus brings them in turn to his community, the top of the hill, and suggests opening the trade.

Attack on the Savior's Outpost (Season 6)
At Hilltop, Rick's group learns everything about the Saviors, a murderous group that claims the homage of Hilltop and other communities. Rick proposes to destroy the Saviors in exchange for Hilltop food and medicine. Rick's group goes where they think saviors are and eliminates them. But there are many more saviors, and Carol and Maggie, who are pregnant, are captured. They end up escaping.

Negan Kills Glenn and Abraham (Season 6 / Season 7)
After several other clashes with the Saviors who caused the death, Carol leaves the group because she does not want to kill anymore. Morgan finds her and saves her saviors. When Maggie gets sick, Rick and a group try to take him to Hilltop's doctor, but they are captured by Saviors and their leader, Negan, who kills Abraham and Glenn with a baseball bat.

Negan forces Rick to work for him (season 7)
While Rick and the group are captured, Sasha takes Maggie to Hilltop for medical care. Morgan takes Carol to another community, the Kingdom, where they meet King Ezekiel, his leader. Carol leaves to live outside the kingdom to avoid killing. Negan asks Alexandria to give him supplies, under the threat of killing more people, and Rick executes. He also tortures Daryl to try to get him to join the Saviors.

Carl tries to kill Negan (Season 7)
After Negan has taken all the rifles from Alexandria, Carl puts himself in a truck of the Savior. He kills two of Negan's men, but instead of killing him, Negan makes him visit. On her return to Alexandria, Rosita tries to kill Negan with a bullet fired by Eugene, but fails. The saviors kill two people from Alexandria in response and bring Eugene back to his camp, the Sanctuary. Rick decides to fight the saviors and hopes to get help from Hilltop.

Tara discovers Oceanside (Season 7)
On a refueling, Tara falls off a bridge and washes at Oceanside. The community is hiding saviors after trying to fight them. Negan responded by killing all the men in the camp. Tara, however, escapes with the help of a girl named Cyndie and promises to tell no one about her location.

Rick discovers the Scavengers (Season 7)
Rick and Aaron are on another trail when they find a boat full of supplies. Someone follows them to Alexandria and kidnaps Father Gabriel. Rick and his team leave for a colony at a landfill, and Rick convinces them to join the fight. They demand that Rick bring them guns in exchange, which Michonne and Rick manage to do.

The Kingdom decides to join the fight (Season 7)
Ezekiel made an agreement with the Saviors to give them provisions in exchange for leaving them alone. Richard, one of Ezekiel's men who is convinced that they should participate in Rick's fight, triggers a conflict between the two groups. When Benjamin, a young soldier of the Kingdom, is killed, Morgan kills Richard and Ezekiel decides to fight the Saviors.

Scavengers betray Alexandria (Season 7)
In the final of season 7, Alexandria prepares to face Negan with an ambush, but at the last second, the Scavengers betray Rick and take it to them. Sasha, whom Negan captured, agrees to accompany her to Alexandria to help her negotiate peace, but she kills herself and becomes a zombie during her trip. She attacks Negan, distracting him long enough for Rick's group to defend himself. Before Negan can kill Carl and Rick, Ezekiel's group along with Maggie and Hilltop's troops arrive and force the Saviors to retreat.

Rick goes to war with Negan (Season 8)
With Hilltop, the Kingdom and Alexandria, Rick executes a plan to attack the Sanctuary with a flock of walkers. The alliance is victorious, but Negan survives and captures Gabriel while everyone flees the walkers.

The alliance removes the outposts of Negan (Season 8)
Fighters from Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom simultaneously attack Negan's outposts, striking the Saviors significantly. There are however victims, including Eric, Aaron's boyfriend. But opinions diverge about taking a prisoner of Saviors: some people want to execute them, while others think it will make them as bad as the people of Negan.

Rick meets Morales (Season 8)
While Rick and others lead teams that attack Negan saviors in various places, he meets Morales – a character who was part of Camp Rick found Lori and Carl in the path of Season 1. Morales suggests that Rick is just as much a monster as Negan, but before he can convince Morales otherwise, Daryl kills him.

Ezekiel loses faith (Season 8)
When the group of Kingdom fighters, led by King Ezekiel, attacked another Savior outpost, they were shot by defenders with the help of a heavy machine gun. Most of Ezekiel's inhabitants were killed by protecting him, including his tiger, Shiva, which made him lose confidence in him as a leader.

Negan décide de lancer une campagne terroriste contre le sommet de la colline, que tous ses ennemis défendent actuellement, en recouvrant les armes des sauveurs avec le sang de Walker et en les utilisant pour infecter les gens au combat. En route pour attaquer Hilltop, Rick attaque Negan et les deux se battent seuls. Simon reprend les Sauveurs, voulant massacrer tout le monde au sommet de la colline. Negan s'échappe de Rick mais est capturé par Jadis, dont le groupe, les Scavengers, a été anéanti par un Simon enragé contre les ordres de Negan.
