PHILADELPHIA – Things got heated between Eric Reid, the Carolina Panthers 'security, and Malcolm Jenkins, Philadelphia Eagles' safety, before Sunday's game at Lincoln Financial Field.
This apparently dates back to their quarrel that began last year, when Reid retired from the Players Coalition.
An assistant coach and a Carolina official had to keep Reid on the sidelines when the Eagles were introduced.
Reid ran into the field during the draw and entered a heated exchange with Jenkins, who was on the field for the draw, before the Eagles' former receiver. Torrey Smith and several other Panthers have mastered Reid.
Reid, while he was on defense, continued to look to the Philadelphia sideline where Jenkins stood in the first rounds. At the beginning of the first quarter, Reid went into attack and sent quarterback Carson Wentz to the ground after Wentz gave the ball to the back. The tight end of the Eagles, Zach Ertz, followed Reid and both players were summoned for personal fouls.
After the game, Reid called Jenkins "sold out" a few times.
Reid, signed by Carolina three weeks ago when safety, Da 'Norris Searcy, suffered a concussion ending the season, kneeled during the national anthem to continue to protest social injustice.
Reid was the first player to kneel alongside Colin Kaepernick when they were both with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.
Jenkins, the co-founder of the Players Coalition, initially participated in the events. It stopped last season after the NFL announced that it would give $ 100 million to causes considered important to the coalition.
On Sunday, Reid said it was thought Jenkins was "capitalizing on the situation, he co-opted Colin's move to get his organization financed, it's cowardly, he sold us."
In response, Jenkins said, "I would never get up here to say something bad about someone I know who really intended to help the community, especially those who were not there. Another black man, so I'll leave it there. "
Reid claimed that Jenkins had excluded Kaepernick from meetings in which players were asked to stop demonstrating during the national anthem if the NFL donated. Reid and several other players announced in November 2017 that they were pulling out of the coalition. Reid's concerns included sources of funding for this initiative.
"In the discussion we had, Malcolm told us – based on discussions he had with the NFL – that the money would come from funds already allocated to breast cancer awareness and salvation to the service." Reid said at the time. "Thus, homeowners would not have the slightest embarrassment to get out of it: they would only transfer the money from these programs to this one."
Jenkins was offended by Reid's complaint at the time, telling ESPN that Reid was fully aware of the "scope of the plan".
"The last time we had conversations with [Roger] Goodell and Troy Vincent, Michael Thomas and Eric Reid were participating in this call, "said Jenkins. They understood the proposal. What we did not have was a conversation with the coalition players based on the responses received from the league.
"Then we talked about myself contacting Troy Vincent just to give them some of our comments, which I did.This call did not have the effect Mike or Eric Everyone agreed to do it. "
