Carrboro, N.C. – Chapel Hill / Carrboro School Authorities Have Decided to Discontinue Courses Early Monday After Announcement of a Rupture of the Waterline at the Carrboro City Waters Company , announced the authorities.
Elementary schools were to close at 11:30, colleges will close at noon and high schools will close at 13:00.
After school programs and activities were also canceled, said Jeff Nash, a spokesperson for Chapel Hill / Carrboro Schools.
"Due to a break in a main water main, we have buildings with reduced or no water pressure," Nash said.
The authorities have not yet explained what caused the water line to break, but a video showed that water was springing from the OWASA (Orange Water and Sewer Authority) factory. ) on Jones Ferry Road.
Police blocked the road in front of the factory located at 400 Jones Ferry Road.
The crews had been on the scene since 6:30 am to try to contain the leak. According to Ed Kerwin, executive director of OWASA, the main pipeline in front of the plant has burst and the plant is rapidly losing water.
Kerwin urges the people of Chapel Hill and Carrboro to use the water in an essential way until the problem is solved.
The officials first stated that the water was safe, but they later issued a boil-off notice to these residents.
