NEW YORK – An Amtrak train bound for New York broke down the night before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days of the year, when two of its cars split up. No injuries have been reported.
Train 68, called Adirondack, departed Montreal when the train experienced what Amtrak called a "mechanical problem" just before 7:30 pm near Albany, New York.
Chuck Reeves, a software engineer from Troy, New York, traveled to his parents' home on Long Island for Thanksgiving and boarded the first car behind the locomotive in Albany. Shortly after the withdrawal of the train, he said, he and the other passengers heard a hissing and hissing sound, felt an electric burning smell and felt a cold draft of air.
"Everyone started to turn around," he says, only to realize that there was no train behind them anymore. The train quickly stopped and a conductor left the cars and got into his car.
Reeves said some crying children were comforted by their parents, but for the most part, no one panicked. A state soldier soon boarded to make sure everyone was safe.
Another train was brought to pick up passengers the rest of their trip. Reeves said he had chosen to return home and that his brother was driving him to his parents' home on Thursday.
The train was carrying 287 passengers and crew members. There was no word on the cause of the problem.
