Cary Fukunaga will lead Bond 25 with Daniel Craig

Update (12:30 ET): Fukunaga broke the silence by landing Bond's gig concert during an interview with IndieWire. "I wanted to do one of these [Bond films] for a long time, so it's not new, "he said. Production on Bond 25 is scheduled to begin on March 4, 2019 in London. The GMM release date has been set for February 14, 2020, several months after November 8, 2019.

"We are excited to be working with Cary," producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson said in a statement posted on Twitter. "His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure."

Fukunaga is best known for leading the eight episodes of the first season of HBO's "True Detective" limited series, earning him an Emmy. The director began with the release of Sundance "Sin Nombre" and also made an acclaimed adaptation of "Jane Eyre", as well as Netflix's first original film, "Beasts of No Nation". series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The director told IndieWire last year that he planned to continue shifting between film and television throughout his career.

"In my mind, I do not really differentiate it right now," Fukunaga said in a conversation with IndieWire last year. "In the end, either you gravitate towards a story or you do not. Whether on Netflix or HBO or on the big screen for a while, it will end up on Netflix or HBO.

Fukunaga was already ready to make the horror film "It" for Warner Bros., but gave up because of creative differences. Bond 25 will be Fukunaga's biggest concert to date behind the camera, and he is now one of the only American directors to have directed a James Bond movie. Danny Boyle originally signed to write and direct the film but left creative differences. IndieWire has contacted MGM for more comments.
