Cathay Pacific hacker: a data breach hits millions of passengers

Cathay Pacific (CPCAY) said Wednesday night that a wide range of data, including passenger names, dates of birth, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and passport numbers, had been unveiled.

"We are very sorry for the concern that this data security event could pose to our passengers," said CEO Rupert Hogg in a statement. The airline is contacting those affected, he added.

It's the latest embarrassing data breach to hit a major airline. British Airways announced last month that hackers had stolen the credit card details of 380,000 of its customers.

Hackers who hit Cathay had access to 27 credit card numbers, but without the card's security code and 403 other credit card numbers expired, according to the airline. He stated that he had "no evidence that personal data were misused", adding that "no password has been compromised".

The company is currently investigating piracy with the help of a cybersecurity company.

"We want to reassure our passengers that we have taken and continue to take steps to strengthen our IT security," Hogg said.
