The Cayuga County Health Department is encouraging people to get the flu shot after the worst flu season in 40 years.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the federal Centers for Disease Control recommended that all people aged 6 months and older be vaccinated against influenza and that everyone be vaccinated every year because influenza strains often vary from one year to the next.
According to the CDC, the 2017-2018 influenza season has been the deadliest of the last four decades – a very serious season with an increase in the number of sickness cases and hospitalizations in all age groups. The latest influenza vaccines have been updated to better match the circulating viruses.
The Ministry of Health said it was particularly important to vaccinate people at high risk of flu complications and those who are in contact with high-risk people, such as children from 6 months to 5 years old. ; pregnant women; people 50 years old and over; those who suffer from other diseases or who are immunocompromised by asthma, heart disease or diabetes; and those living in retirement homes and other long-term care facilities.
It is extremely important to get vaccinated if you live with or care for people at high risk of complications, including caregivers. day care providers; family contacts of people with a disease that puts them at high risk for complications; family contacts and caretakers of children under 5, especially under 6 months. (Children under 6 months old are too young to be vaccinated.) Statistics show that children are the most likely to get the flu and that the elderly die, according to the health department.
The Department of Health offers flu shots to children and adults and charges for vaccine coverage if your insurance covers it. The department can also bill part B of Medicare. Uninsured persons can arrange for free catch by calling the Department of Health at (315) 253-1560.
The Cayuga County Health Department hosts two flu clinics. Appointments are welcome, but appointments are preferred. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the main line at (315) 253-1560. The clinics will take place:
• 10 am to 2 pm Wednesday, October 17 at the municipal offices of the city of Sterling.
• 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Friday, October 19th at the Department of Health Office, 8 Dill St., Auburn.

Influenza vaccines are also available at most health care providers and pharmacies in the county.
