Announced at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer, CBS revealed that its series of short stand-alone episodes – Star Trek: Short Treks – would start coming out next month and reveal more details about what everyone would be.
CBS describes them as short stories, "which dive deeper into Star Trek: discovery universe. The episodes will be held monthly, on the first Thursday of the next four months, and will each focus on three Star Trek: discovery.
The first episode (broadcast Oct. 4), "Runaway," will follow Tilly (Mary Wiseman) after "meeting an unexpected visitor in need of help." , Craft (Aldis Hodge), who wakes up in the sick bay of an abandoned ship, and his only companion is a computer interface. The third episode, "The Brightest Star", airs December 6 and follows Saru (Doug Jones) before his stint at Starfleet. The last episode, "The Escape Artist" will follow Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) he finds himself on a hostile ship.
Autonomous episodes are a new experience of CBS and its streaming platform, All Access. Web sites and streaming services are not tied to the rules of television broadcasting – which generally dictate a run time of 20 or 40 minutes per episode, with commercial breaks – and there have been some interesting experiences at over the years. SyFy (then the SCI FI Channel) has released a bunch of Battlestar Galactica webisodes between 2006 and 2008 that added to some of the show's scenarios, and Netflix experimented with different runtimes for shows like Arrested development and Longmire.
Autonomous episodes of CBS can fulfill a new function: to tell a visual story that does not necessarily correspond to the standard execution of TV episodes, but which could serve as a useful point to add to a character or situation. We'll see later this year how much it works for CBS and Star Trek.
