In addition, 63 people were reported to have been sick after eating Salmonella-contaminated ground beef, federal health officials said Tuesday, bringing the total number of sick people in 22 states to 120.
The beef, distributed by JBS Tolleson, Inc. of Tolleson, Arizona, has been sold by several major chains, including Walmart and Sam's Club, the US Department of Agriculture announced. The company recalled 6.5 million pounds of beef products earlier this month after the discovery of the contamination.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide that 33 people have been hospitalized for serious infections, but no one has died.
"Consumers who have ground beef at home and bear the establishment number" EST. 267 "should consult the USDA-FSIS website for a list of stores and countries where recalled ground beef has been sold," said the CDC.
"The meat has been sold under many different brands in many stores and the brand is the best way to identify recalled beef."
The products have been sold under several labels including Cedar River Farms, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms, JBS Generic, Showcase and Showcase / Walmart. "Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. The disease usually lasts four to seven years and most people recover without treatment.
