Two women from central Massachusetts are suing a resort in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire after reporting having contracted legionnaires' disease when they stayed at the hotel last month.
The two women were identified by Seacoastonline as Louise M. Pare of Gardner and Celeste M. Billington of Templeton. The complaint, filed Friday in the Superior Court of Rockingham, says the women contracted the disease while they were staying at the resort in early August, according to the WCVB.
Both women experienced symptoms on August 5th, reports the television channel. They spent three days at the Sands Resort and believe that they have contracted spa disease, reports the WCVB.
In addition to the hotel, the lawsuit claims that Aqua Paradise Pools & Spas is responsible for their diseases.
A report released earlier this month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that Legionella bacteria had been found in some rooms, a hot tub, a water heater and an outdoor shower hose.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Social Services has ordered The Sands Resort to "take immediate action to cure the identified Legionella bacteria and inform customers of the presence of the bacteria".
"The first CDC test results indicate the presence of Legionella bacteria in several environmental samples taken from the water system of the facility." I issued this order to ensure health guests and visitors to the facility, as well as the health of Hampton residents and visitors, "said DHHS Commissioner Jeffrey A. Meyers." The Sands Resort will immediately inform current and future guests of the Legionella outbreak and will take steps to address the problem of installing plumbing in the premises in order to mitigate the risks to the public health. "
One person died and 14 others were infected, according to the authorities.
The station indicates that the water system has been cleaned.
