Central NY on Flood Monitoring as Approach Gordon Remains

Syracuse, NY – Flood monitoring was launched for central New York as the remains of Tropical Storm Gordon hit the northeast.

The watch is in effect from Sunday evening to Monday evening. The National Weather Service said that 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall, with some areas becoming even larger. The rain should start Sunday night and become heavy Sunday evening and Monday.

Heavy rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon could cause flooding in central New York.

"This prolonged period of moderate to heavy rains will cause an increase in water and a high threat of flooding, especially along small streams and streams," said the guard.

A watch means that expected rains could cause flooding.

The watch applies to Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Tompkins and Yates departments.

The first round of rain will rain what is now a relatively dry soil, creating the possibility of flash floods Monday at the end of the day, with a second batch of rain.

The weather service is also monitoring tropical storm Florence, which continues to dabble in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 kilometers off the US coast. The latest forecasts show that Florence remains well south of New York.

"There is a growing consensus on a south track in the Carolinas, which would likely mean drier forecasts for New York," said the Binghamton office. "There is still a lot of uncertainty in the long run."
