Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said the players were worried that Young Boys Bern's artificial pitch would inflict injuries on them.

United defeated the Young Boys 3-0 in their Group H Champions League match on Wednesday.

"Now I can say, I do not understand how you can play the best club competition on artificial terrain," said Mourinho, who had refused to comment on the surface before the game.

"You know, some people probably fear injuries. I had players after being coached yesterday – light workout – and they felt ankles, back pain, pains.

"It's not easy, especially not for people who are not suitable. Also a little fear in the duels.

"People are used to great surfaces in England, they are always watered if not rainy – the clubs they provide for water and football are much more beautiful," said Mourinho.

Before the match, Mourinho had urged his team to follow the example of the great Swiss tennis player Roger Federer and to show that they were able to win on different surfaces.

The Italian champions of Juventus and Valencia Spain will also visit Bern in Group H.
