Saturday at the 2018 BMW Championship was as easy as the world class tournaments, and with the number of big names we had in the running trying to publish something near 60, it was very enjoyable to watch. After three rounds at Aronimink, Justin Rose leads to 17 under, but Rory McIlroy birdied last to shoot 63 and is just behind him at 16 under, tied with Xander Schauffele.
The top 10 players in the standings combined to shoot 50 in the third inning, after heavy rains pushed back the tee times and turned two players into trios. However, none of the scores were wilder than McIlroy's. Somehow, he came out in 31 with a double boguey (!) And played back in 32 with a brace as the biggest thrill.
McIlroy leads the pack in 54 holes, is second from start to green and ranks in the top 15. It's basically the perfect formula for McIlroy to win a tournament. It also has some weather help. It's no big secret that McIlroy blossomed on a rough ride, and he knocked him down with his second round of 63 or better this week on Saturday. Tommy Fleetwood was eliminated during the day.
He will have the company on Sunday, however, as Rose and Schauffele regrouped at 9 under 131 while they were regrouped in the last trio of the day. Rose in particular looks like a drummer in the world when he enters this kind of area. He is close to the average (T9 in round 4) and hopes to win his fifth world victory in the last 12 months.
Beyond this trio, Fleetwood (-15) and Rickie Fowler (-15), Justin Thomas (-15) and Hideki Matsuyama (-13) and Tiger Woods (-12). If Sunday is half less exciting than Saturday – and given the names involved, I think that will probably be the case! – Then we will finish the last tournament before determining the last 30 of the championship in two weeks.
Here are four more points to remember from the third round of the BMW Championship.
1. Rating: Saturday's final result average was a pass of 67 after finishing more than 68 in the first round and 67.3 in the second round. To say that the conditions were easy, is to say that McIlroy hits his pilot rather well. Players enjoyed the many inches of rain for the night in Philadelphia and absolutely pulling at each pin without considering the negative repercussions. It was like a US Open but exactly the opposite. I did not have enough!
2. What is the load of the team of the American Ryder Cup? Schauffele, ranked 20th in the world, could win one of the biggest non-major events of the season three weeks before the Ryder Cup and will probably not be in Paris. It's amazing and another sign of the depth and quality of this American team.
3. Four 65 enough? Can you imagine pulling four consecutive 65-year-olds in your first tournament in almost a month and not bringing the trophy home after this event? Rickie Fowler is 75% after his third 65 in a row Saturday. Whether he wins or not, this week has been a success since he proved that he was ready for Paris and the 2018 Ryder Cup.
4. Fleetwood 62-62: Tommy Fleetwood was 3rd over par by eight holes Thursday. He then played the next 46 holes in 18 under and is now 15 under the total, two points from the lead. He's probably not going to win, but following a 62 Friday with another Saturday is both a sign of his talent and he should make all fans of the American Ryder Cup fear what to expect.
