LEBANON, Ohio – The first sale of souvenirs and personal items by Neil Armstrong, a former resident of the Lebanon region, including fragments of the 1903 flyer of the Wright brothers, the famous astronaut, reported more than 5.2 millions of dollars.
The highest price – $ 468,500 – was an Apollo 11 lunar module identification plate, which Armstrong released in July 1969 to become the first man to set foot on the moon.
Thousands of artifacts recount the life and career of Armstrong, who was raised in Wapakoneta and lived quietly outside Lebanon after becoming a national hero at the head of the mission.
A childhood letter that Armstrong wrote to the Easter Bunny sold for $ 4,000; his scout field cap reached $ 12,000; a gold pin of his wife carried into space brought in $ 17,500; and one of his Gemini flight suits was purchased for $ 109,375.
Approximately 3,000 lots, consisting of several items, are auctioned in three parts. Before the start of the first three-day sale on November 1, Mark Armstrong said that his father's recollections included "memories that make you think, articles that make you laugh, and articles that make you scratch your face. head".
The famous astronaut died in 2012 at the age of 82 years.
More than 760 lots were sold at the first sale, including two Wright Flyer 1903 propeller spruces and four left wing muslins, all taken to the moon just 66 years after Kitty Hawk's historic flight. The propeller fragments yielded $ 275,000 each and the pieces of cloth have prices ranging from $ 112,500 to $ 175,000.
Armstrong's sons, Mark and Rick, auctioned the items. The remaining lots will be sold on two dates in 2019, the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.

The auction set a record for the most valuable space memorabilia auction in history, according to Heritage Auctions, based in Dallas. The company said that about 2,450 bidders had searched for artifacts.
