Chechnya: woman blew herself up at Grozny checkpoint | News from the world

A woman was detonated Saturday near a police checkpoint in Grozny, the Chechen capital, in southern Russia, but no one else was killed no injuries, reported the RIA news agency.

The police asked her to stop and present her documents, but when she refused to obey, she found that she was carrying a homemade explosive device. They fired a warning shot and she blew up the camera, the Interfax news agency reported.

The Chechnya province, once restless, has been virtually calm in recent years under the reign of strong regional man Ramzan Kadyrov. Moscow waged two wars against separatists in the 1990s and 2000s as a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union.

In August, activists staged a series of attacks against police targets in Chechnya and the Islamic State claimed responsibility without providing any evidence.

The enlarged region of the North Caucasus, however, remains unstable, with unemployment and corruption pushing some young men to adopt radical Islam.
