Chemical gas leak closes Delaware Memorial Bridge

An interstate vital bridge in South Jersey was closed during one of the busiest travel days of the year.

Delaware River Authority and the Bay Authority (DRBA) spokesman James Salmon said the Delaware Memorial Bridge was closed around 5:00 pm. due to a chemical gas leak at Croda's production facility in New Castle, Delaware, nearby. The factory is located next to the northern suspension of the bridge.

Salmon says that DRBA has been asked to close the bridge as a precautionary measure and to redirect traffic through the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

Salmon added DNREC officials are currently on the plant site and there is no estimate of when the bridge will be reopened.

The tollbooth, which would be cluttered with vehicles on a holiday weekend, is empty of vehicles Sunday night after the closure of the Delaware Memorial Bridge in both directions.

The bridge treats daily up to 75,000 vehicles in the southbound direction. Sunday being one of the busiest traffic days of the year, the number of vehicles doubles.

It is the only Delaware bridge connecting New Jersey to the United States. It is mainly used by 95-year-old travelers from the state. It also supplies New Jersey Turnpike and I-295.
