The Union County Sheriff's Office said Monday morning that rescuers were looking for Kaiden Lee-Welch, a one-year-old boy swept away on Sunday.

The boy's mother was driving east on Highway N.C. 218 to Wadesboro in northern Union County on Sunday night. Investigators said that there were barricades on the road flooded by the nearby Richardson Creek.

According to a statement from the Union County Sheriff's Office, the woman bypassed the barricades and attempted to cross the stretch of flooded road. That's when his car was washed away by the road.

"His vehicle left the road and stopped in the middle of a group of trees," the sheriff's officials said. "She managed to free herself and Kaiden, who was in a car seat, but lost her grip on the water in a hurry."

The search lasted until midnight Sunday, according to the WBTV observation partner. The researchers started looking for Kaiden again Monday morning.
