The bodies of five people, including a woman and children, were found in a suburban home in the Australian city of Perth.

The police do not know yet how they were killed and it is not known if weapons were found on the scene.

A man, who would be in his twenties, is being detained and interrogated after presenting himself to the police.

Paul Steel, Deputy Commissioner of Western Australia, said:

"We understand that there are adults and children involved."

He confirmed that up to five bodies were found on the scene when police arrived in the suburbs of Bedford Sunday at noon.

Mr. Steel added, "I can say that there was at least one woman but I can not say more than that, I'm afraid.

"The scene has not been examined legally yet, so the exact number of adults and children is unknown to me".

Investigators are currently looking for evidence in the house and the police can not provide more details about the victims.

Public safety raises no concern.

While violent crimes involving multiple victims are rare in the country, this was the second major incident in Western Australia this year.

Seven people were shot dead in the Mass shooting at Margaret River in Maywhile a mother and her two children were murdered at Ellenbrook in July.

Firearms crime dropped sharply in Australia after strict controls were introduced following the 1996 massive shooting in Tasmania, when the single gunman Martin Bryant killed 35 people.
