There is a serious problem with Spellman: Sabrina is allergic to Salem. Or at least Kiernan Shipka is. "I get a call that says," Kiernan is allergic to cats ". Sabrina Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, showrunner "It crossed my mind: could Salem be a dog?" The ultimate answer, of course, was no. Salem must be a cat … but must Sabrina be a witch?

This is the central fight during season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the latest project featuring the beloved character of Archie Comics – the best-known of the 90s sitcom Sabrina, the teenage witch, which featured Melissa Joan Hart as the half-witch and half-witch who lived with her aunts and relied on Salem, her talking cat, for advice (and sarcastic comments). But this adaptation is less a story of laughter – no double hall closet as a portal – and is instead based on the 2014 cartoon of the same title written by Aguirre-Sacasa.

"We do not do it again Sabrina, the teenage witchExplains Lucy Davis, who plays Sabrina's Aunt Hilda. "This is a different thing." Specifically, Aguirre-Sacasa adds: "The idea was to make a dark horror version of Sabrina, something that was more a horror of slow burning, like L & # 39; Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby and all those great satanic horror movies of the 1960s and 1970s. "

The series begins in the town of Greendale in the days leading up to Sabrina's 16th birthday. But it's not a sweetie. It is rather the day when Sabrina has to decide her future. While some teenagers choose their first cars, Sabrina chooses between a human life and a magical life. This decision is complicated only when the choice of his powers can result in the loss of his free will.

"There's a little minor thing to sign your soul that seems a bit intense for Sabrina," says Shipka. The star, who was the first choice of Aguirre-Sacasa, is best known for her work as Sally Draper Mad Men. Now she's playing a Sabrina who has to decide if she's going to pledge allegiance to the Dark Lord (a must to become a full-fledged witch). "Sabrina has to face the devil and these formidable opponents, and someone like Kiernan has the courage and the assurance to do it," said Aguirre-Sacasa. Shipka adds: "It is this really weak girl who is becoming individualized and interested in love, while focusing on her power and struggling between these two completely separate worlds.

A world is home to her aunts Zelda (Miranda Otto) and Hilda, with whom she lives, and the other is home to her boyfriend, Harvey (Ross Lynch), and to his classmates. ;school. "The show mixes a lot of different tones because there's a sweet and light high school tone and romance between Sabrina and Harvey, and then you have the darker tone of the Spellman house and everything that goes on there, Said Otto.

But what if Sabrina does not want to give up either? "[The season is] as a result of his dark education, "says Aguirre-Sacasa, making each episode his own mini-film (with a tribute to L & # 39; Exorcist). "It's all part of a bigger bow, that is to say, it's trying to maintain its humanity as its witch nature grows."

And on the other side of Sabrina, the whole trip will be familiar, Salem … but not too close. "We keep a safe distance," Shipka explains jokingly, saying that "it's as if the actors who did not get along in the shows: Kiernan and the cat hated each other."

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina hits Netflix on October 26th.
