Still, there is a lot of upside, said Hsieh.

"We tell investors that the opportunity ahead of Nio is huge," he said. "China accounts for 60% of the world market and even grows by 80% this year, even though the car market is down."

In addition, Nio is the only high-end electric vehicle in China besides Tesla, and Nio's seven-seater SUV is a better product at a lower price than the Tesla X, Hsieh said.

"Our price is less than half the price, better characteristics, a faster car," he said.

Nio will also come out with a model that will be comparable to the Tesla 3 model at about two-thirds of the price, with longer range and faster acceleration.

Tesla was not immediately available for comment.
