A Chinese writer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for writing and selling a novel starring scenes of gay sex.

The writer, identified as Liu, was imprisoned last month by a court in Anhui Province for producing and selling "obscene material".

His novel, titled "Occupation", describes "male homosexual behavior … including perverse sexual acts such as violation and abuse".

But his long prison sentence sparked protests across Chinese social media.

According to the Beijing News, Liu – better known by his online pseudonym Tian Yi – has now appealed the court's decision.

On October 31, Liu was sentenced to a term of imprisonment by the Wuhu People's Court for making and selling "obscene material" for profit, according to the local news website Wuhu news.

However, the details of the audience have only been revealed this week on Chinese media.

The police were informed about his novel after it began to gain popularity on the Internet.

Liu allegedly sold more than 7,000 copies of books and other erotic novels and reportedly made 150,000 yuan ($ 21,604), the Global Times reported.

But many social media users have argued that the sentence she received was excessive.

"10 years for a novel? It's too much," said a social media user on Weibo.

Another referred to an incident in 2013 in which a former official was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a four-year-old girl.

"People convicted of rape have less than 10 years in prison, this writer is 10 years old," said another Weibo user.
