Chipotle fired the director of one of his St. Paul sites after images showing an alleged incident of racial stereotyping became viral on social media.
Masud Ali, 21, posted a video on Thursday, showing him and his friends trying to be served at 867 Grand Avenue Chipotle after going to the gym.
The beginning of the video, which has been viewed more than half a million times since Ali uploaded on Twitter, shows the manager telling the group, "You have to pay because you never have money when you come here."
"You are stereotyping us," said one of Ali's friends to the staff, "why?"
Ali posted several other videos showing their interaction, and it seems that the manager confused the men with other men who had been to the restaurant a night earlier and could not afford their meal.
"So Chipotle will stay here and tell me that I can not eat because they think I look like someone who stole them before ???" Ali tweeted.
The manager apologized to other customers as the disruption continued. The men then showed him money to prove that they could afford to pay. They have not been served yet.
Chipotle responded to Ali's tweet by confirming that the manager in question had been "fired".
In another statement to BMTN, a Chipotle spokesperson said, "We are committed to treating all our customers fairly and with respect." Regarding what happened at St. Paul's Restaurant, Director thought that these gentlemen were the same were not able to pay for their meal.
