Chris Evans announced on Thursday that he had officially hung up his shield.
After playing Captain America for almost a decade, Evans tweeted that it was over.
"Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was a day full of emotion for the least. Playing this role in the past 8 years has been an honor. To all who are in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful ", Evans tweeted.
The actor had previously evaded the removal of the character in a profile in the The New York Times who quoted it as saying, "You want to get off the train before they push you."
Evans, 37 – who played Johnny Storm in two Fantastic Four films – played for the first time with Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in 2011 Captain America: the first avenger.
He would continue to play the fan favorite in The Avengers (2012) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: the era of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016) Avengers: Infinity War (2018), as well as cameo in a number of other Marvel films.
After Evans' retreat, it is possible that another Captain America rises in the Marvel film universe. In the comics, Steve Rogers has been replaced in the past by characters belonging to the MCU, such as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson, alias of the Falcon (Anthony Mackie).
Evans makes his last appearance as Captain America in the current untitled Avengers 4. Evans' Captain America had relatively little screen time this year Avengers: Infinity War, the authors of this film and Avengers 4 said that there would be many more heroes in the next installment.
